Hiring veterans seems to be the buzz phrase among employers lately. Starbucks Coffee Company has widened its hiring commitment to embrace not just veterans, but also spouses and then use part of their profits to benefit troops’ families.

In November Starbucks announced a new initiative to hire 10,000 veterans and active duty spouses over the next five years. In the same time span the company also has plans to open five stores at joint bases around the U.S. Part of the income from those stores will be donated to local non-profits that invest in resources to help members of the local military community.

Two stores in Washington and Texas have already begun operations and give a portion of each of their transactions to Operation GoodJobs and Vested in Vets. A company representative said the move makes good business sense and good community sense.

The spokesperson said this type of involvement makes the company more than a local coffee shop, it makes the organization, and its employees, part of the fabric of the community and part of the conversation to improve local needs.

Starbucks officials said the company, who already has 200,000 employees worldwide, has jobs for every talent and level of experience of the veterans and spouses who apply. Open job positions range from store manager to logistics roles. Officials also tout the flexible work schedules and benefit packages that pair will with the mobile military life style.
